FoGR Early Renaissance in Roll Call 2013
Early Danish vs Swiss
Game 1 Early Danish vs Early Polish
Game 2 Early Danish vs Flodden Scots
Game 4 Early Danish vs Austrian
Third game, and more Pikemen. This time Graham Briggs super speedy Swiss
The lists for the Early Danish and Swiss from this game, as well as all the other lists from the games at Roll Call can be seen here in the FoGR Wiki.
FoGR hint - Determined Foot Swiss move 33% faster than normal infantry. Frightening.
The Swiss deployed in a huge blob at the back of the table, and immediately started rushing forwards
The Danish plan was obvious - delay the Pikemen, try and pick off the bits and pieces. The Swiss army had been designed such that the bits and pieces were not however enough to break the army… oooh!

The plan was to face off at least one, maybe two of the Swiss blocks with Reiters and Gendarmes, and do everything possible to gang up on the others and surround them from all sides.
Shooting was all about getting lucky with a possible base loss or even DISR result - and with the Swiss only bringing 2 Generals they might struggle to deal with any loss of cohesion.
The battle started with the speedy Swiss catching some incautious Danish skirmishers in the rear - they would be on the Gendarmes rather sooner than expected
The skirmishers were wiped out to a man. No messing around here..
On the left a nice cauldron was being built for the best Swiss units to insert themselves into
The Swiss were now in something of a log-jam, and the envelopment was taking precedence as a tactic over and above the "get the bits and pieces" approach - with the Swiss arriving sooner than expected the time to nick the odds and sods had now gone.
The Landsnechts were up for this - they took the initiative and charged in against the Swiss pikemen along with a unit of Gendarmes. The sooner they could get into melee the better, as then their advantage of width might come into its' own
Both units of Swiss were now getting ready to be in contact - they would be at right angles, unable to mutually support. A partial success…
Elsewhere the other 2 Swiss units were attempting to beat back the Danish horse - not as easy as it looks when the Danes had better armour, and were able to break off if they started to lose
If the "avoid the Pikemen" plan was not exactly flying, the "eat the bits" plan was actually in tatters - Superior Gendarmes and Average Reiters now losing to Average Gendarmes on the right flank..
The Pikemen clashed so hard that the whole world shook… but two of the blocks of Swiss were now DISR, and with the Swiss only with one General in the middle this was a big problem…
Speaking of problems, the Gendarmes were blown away …
The Swiss centre suddenly started to collapse - two pike blocks were routed, and with no room in the crushed melee this immediately exposed the flanks of the rest of the Swiss infantry centre, and soon all the remaining two Swiss blocks were being assailed from all sides. The situation was unsustainable, and the Swiss army broke, with the best infantry losses taking the army over 50%
The Result is a rather unusual huge win

Post Match Summary from the Early Danish Commander
In American, Bacon Day is held on the Saturday before Labor Day, but in Switzerland Bacon day is clearly today! What a fabulous victory for our great mercenaries, and a resounding endorsement for our strategy of taking the much unfancied Reiters who took down a pike block, much as planned
The word "bacon" comes from the German word bacho, which means buttock, and we certainly kicked the Swiss Bacho's hard, firm and right out of the park this fine day, and no longer will they plan on moving through Germany and up into our home county in their search for something tasty and crispy in order to have as a savoury snack before gorging themselves on chocolate!
Whilst there may appear to have been a lot of luck in this game, actually it was a great plan coming together and not down to luck at all.
Bring on the next and final opponent, as I now feel well placed to bid for the trophy positions!
Hannibal's Post Match Analysis
Bedre en salt slid over sitt eget bord, end en fersk gedde overet fremmed is a common saying in Denmark, and it always applies in situations like this.
Winning by hook or by crook is always satisfying, even if it is done with no style and no skill, but dry bread at home is better than roast meat abroad, especially when the meat is bacon, not famed for its roasting capacity.
Quite how you managed to beat a General-led Elite pike unit with an average Pike unit is still puzzling me, however I guess one must take these things when they come, and this one certainly arrived in a rush.
Frankly I don't even feel I need to point out what you did wrong here, it was so obvious that I suspect even you know. But you won, so I give up...
