FoGR Early Renaissance in Roll Call 2013
Early Danish vs Flodden Scots
Game 1 Early Danish vs Early Poles
Game 2 Early Danish vs Flodden Scots
Game 4 Early Danish vs Austrian
Game 2 saw the Danes take a quick jaunt across the North Sea (almost Viking-esque) and turn out against the Scots, in a Flodden-recreating guise as fielded by the almost-as-highly-ranked as Alasdair, Don "not quite The Don" Avis.
The lists for the Early Danish and Flodden Scots from this game, as well as all the other lists from the games at Roll Call can be seen here in the FoGR Wiki.
Again much of the terrain fell on one side of the table, but this time it was my opponents who got the benefit (or hindrance) of almost all of it, with a positively Scottish highland terrain of hills, forests and areas of brush to stuff their pikemen into
With no meaningful cavalry in the Scots army, even the dogmatically selected Danish Reiters felt brave enough to push forward and risk the Scottish artillery park, and this highly unusual troop type was bound to cause some consternation to the Scots skirmishers who were seeking to delay the advance of the Danes against the static Scottish positions
The Scots were not coming out, allowing the Danes plenty of time to redeploy their units at will - here a Danish general takes some light foote across the front of the Landsnecht pikemen
The Scots were mostly Feudal Castings which were sold by QRF miniatures, but they have now sold the range to Sgt Major Miniatures in the states and they're now marketed under the "Bloody Day " banner as Feudal Scots - a nice size to tie in with my Peter Pig Scots, should I ever get round to expanding that army…
The Scots archers were rather outclassed, and chose to hide in a wood on the Scots right flank
The Pike blocks were very, very Scottish, with their saltire pavise type thingies at the front
As the Danes drove off the Scottish light horse, the Scots pikemen decided to come forward off of their hill and make a game of it (possibly encouraged by the Danish artillery park to be fair)
The Danish artillery were not that numerous, but with nothing likely to run them down they were happily firing away at the dense Scottish targets. In the distance a rather redundant Danish gendarme unit meanderes in the distance trying unsuccessfully to trap some Scottish LH
Other gendarmes were walking round the flank of the Scottish army, as the Scottish bowmen remained hidden in the wood, slightly worried that their ability to only shoot one rank might leave them outmatched by 4 LF Danish arquebusiers
The Pike on Pike clash that would inevitably decide the game was getting closer… the Danes were praying to St Anthony
As the Gendarmes arrived on the Scots flank, one of the huge pike blocks was forced to turn - and the archers came under pressure from close range shooting as well
Almost all of the Scots were piling forward on a broad front - the Landsnechts were outnumbered, but had the advantage of having some inbuilt shooters, and almost certainly of the indefensible flanks of the Scots as they moved forward.
The third Gendarme unit was unusually - in the middle, and was getting ready to face off against a pike block, leaving both Landsnechts with one on one combats against Scots Pike blocks
The Scots were forced to charge to try and clear out the Danish LF - this broke up the Scottish line quite nicely. The game was progressing almost entirely to plan for the Danes, as the Scots danced to their tune
The three blocks of pikemen from Scotland were now all separated, and each had an opponent lined up to take it on
On the far right, the Scots had been semi-forced to bring up a unit of bowmen to match the greater width of the Landsnecht pike block and its' shot wings
But, after a fierce, intense and astonishingly short fight (or I rolled a lot of dice and took no photos) the Scots left flank was wiped out, leaving a Landsnecht infantry unit steaming towards the Scots artillery park having pursued and destroyed the Scots pikemen and bowmen
The Danes looked round and spotted that some Scots raiders were tucking into the back stockpile in their baggage - presumably deep frying everything in their path as they looted the stores
The other two combats were taking longer, but in both cases the Danish troops were slowly gaining the upper hand
The Danish Reiters had by now taken a bit of a beating from the Scots artillery, but with the endgame now in sight they girded their loins and carried on advancing into the teeth of the guns, aiming to get behind the Scots pikemen to deliver a devastating rear charge
It was all pretty tough for the Landsnechts as they struggled to win on their own… the Reiters may be needed!
But the Reiters were in! Surviving the artillery, turning around and charging home to hopefully cripple the Scots
Both pike blocks on the left were now fragmented and fighting each other - and on the right two units of Gendarmes are in amongst the Scottish pikemen and will inevitably win..
Both Scottish blocks collapsed at the same time, and the Scots army was broken. Game over, a huge win to the Danes.
The Result is a spectacular win for the descendants of the Vikings against the Sweaties!

Post Match Summary from the Early Danish Commander
A-hah! We all know that no-one can resist bacon, and the Scots with their love of fried food found my army irresistible this afternoon. What a tasty result to add to the sourness of the morning's exhertions, we are now back on the bacon track
To be honest I am not sure what the bacon track actually is, but I imagine that there is a lot of grease and a lovely smell as you slide down it at high speed to a crispy and satisfying end game, and there will be a
Now we have gone across the sea to Scotland, maybe we should keep on heading west and aim for America - after all, we know that bacon is so popular over there that every year the US population eats the equivalent weight in bacon of 8 and a half Nimitz-class aircraft carriers, so with that degree of popularity perhaps they will acclaim me as King and there will be no need for a fight at all?
But now I must go home and plan my breakfast for tomorrow... at least I have some decent points on the board .The bacon board.
Hannibal's Post Match Analysis
Alle ville herrer vaere, ingen ville saekken baerre as they say in the taverns of Old Copehagen, and I am not one to disagree that all to often that all wants to be lords, but no one wants to carry the bag.
Here you grabbed the bag that your opponent so kindly proffered to you with his choice of army, and then with his decision to come out and fight.
You still managed to almost waste one of the three units of Gendarmes that you had explicitly taken this army to try and make good use of, but the mercenaries in your army were able to do the business for you anyway
Winning a straight fight with better troops is not however a foundation on which to build confidence, and perhaps you can remember that once you return after your morning's eating for the third game tomorrow?
