Tillys German Catholic vs Royalist

Game 2 Tillys German Catholic vs Scots & Parliamentarian
Game 3 Tillys German Catholic vs Royalist
Game three was a matchup on the landscape of the Battle of the Dunes (rather better than theBeetle of the Dunes), with a restricted width table where the tide could go out at the end of any turn, uncovering more wide flat sandy stuff
The lists for the Tillys German Catholic and Royalist from this game, as well as all the other lists from the games at Farnborough can be seen here in the FoG:R Wiki.
Starting with the tide in, the game was set up as a straight clash between Royalist and Catholics, with Horse on Horse on my left, and foote on foote in the middle. Skill was not really required by either general….
The Catholics started by sending some extra horse off to the left, to try and overmatch the Royalists on the wing. The horse battle would likely be totally separate to the infantry clash, but it would be good to win both…
The main Catholic attack was on the right and centre with the two Superior Tercios. Unable to fit on the left, a lone Cuirassier unit supported them
Suddenly the tide went out, opening up the flank to some very surprised Royalist dragoons.
Rather than lose their guns and baggage, Tillys men sent the crappy unit of carbine armed horse over to deal with the dragoons, as the Cuirassiers pushed up with the foote on the relatively undefended Royalist left wing
Cuirassiers were already teed up to take on cavaliers on the left
As the fading sunlight cast long shadows across the beach, the two lines of foote got to shooting range
And, shortly after, it was push of pike time as the lines clashed
Everything seemed to be engaged across the board, as the Cuirassiers also charged home
The Royalists had come off worse by far from the initial clashes with the Superior Catholic infantry, sprouting a multitude of DISR and FRAGGED markers almost entirely along the line. This would be a difficult position for Tilly to throw away…
The Royalist centre collapsed and fled in the face of Catholicisms finest..
Even Rupert was pulled from his horse and slain as he regretted leading the infantry to their doom…
On the newly minted wet sand, the Catholic carabiniers were threatening the rather elusive Royalist dragoons with terrible insults, but simultaneously failing to do much real damage. As long as they could keep the Dragoons pinned the artillery would be safe however..
There was insufficient room on the left flank for all of the horsemen to actually fit, and that crush was soon worsened by the addition of some DISR markers for the Catholics
The Royalists attempts to shore up their centre were not doing too well - in the face of massed Catholic firepower the trading of bases 1 for 1 was not favouring the 6-base units over the catholic 9-basers
With that attritional war of pedestrians well and truly won, the catholics raised the standard of victory - Tillys men had crushed the Royalist foote, and with them the whole army! The Result is a 25-0 win for Tilly

Post Match Summary from the German Catholic Commander
Woot Woot! I am surely a genius, having recorded the two best consecutive scrores ever to be seen oon this website in over 100 years of poor quality wargaming! Surely His Holiness in his opulent but still well deserved and in no means paid for off the back of his many willing donors and tithes will see fit to escalate me to the ranks of cardinals for this, even if they have lost the first game in the 2013 World Series rather limply against the Red Sox.
This battle had everything, strategy, elan, panache, and a big blue waterway being taken off the table. A good job for me, but one to send a shiver down the spine of the owner of the Pirate army and its expensive boat I fear.
But at least I have recorded a decent 3-game score of 50 points, although in some ways two 17s and a 16 might have been less traumatic
Im sure it can only get better from here....
Hannibal's Post Match Analysis
You rougish Papist! Thou art truly a waggish dismal-dreaming scut to imagine that this is anything useful to learn from this outcome.
You have managed to general 3 consecutive games in which your tactic has been to charge your whole army straight forwards and engage whoever is in front of you - and whilst eagle-eyed readers may have spotted this approach on pervious occasioiins too, this I fear represents a new nadir in lack of maneuverability for you and your team of Catholic acolytes
All I can learn from this is that big units of superior troor are better than small units of average troops on at least 2 occasions out of every 3. Not much return for a whole day of incodent and dice rolling, is it?
I imagine the next reports will be equally competent and clever....? Begone from my sight you dissembling eye-offending bugbear..!
That's the end - so why not go back to the Match Reports Index and read some more reports?
