Game Three. Three games in one day is hardcore, and doing so in a shopping centre is even more so.. but at least this time two good things happened - firstly my opposition were not more Pirates, and secondly The Ship came out yet again. Three out of four games so far, making it only 16.67 pieces of eight per deployment …!
The lists for me band o'Pirates and Huron Indians from this game, as well as all the other lists from the games at Campaign can be seen here in the FoG:R Wiki.
Unsurprisingly for regular readers, me band o'Pirates was deployed tucked up against the waterway whilst opposite a horde of screaming Huron Indians festered incoherently in the distance. The Huron were a fearsome army, with 4 units of superiors - making them the pick of the bunch in this period. The Pirate shooting would need to be good today…
Review of the Huron army on Madaxeman TV
Me band o'Pirates on the ship were messing around in the rigging, gazing with some fear and trepidation at clouds of horsemen milling on an adjacent table.
I spied in me spyglass that the plan of piling down one flank was being executed in numbers, as in a rare departure from the norm the Pirate General appeared to have taken on board some of Pirate Hannibal's helpful instructions from his feedback in prior games.
Whats actually happening now?
The Huron are better than my men in a straight fight, so my army is making a really determined effort to try and turn the table into a 4' wide fight across the short side by the waterway. The Huron are advancing in a coherent formation behind a thick skirmish screen
Arrr! This determined execution of a simple plan saw a massive block of Pirate musketry appear on the Huron left almost immediately the game started. The Indians were bemused at this fantastic manoeuvring, and equally bemused by the knitted woollen terrain me band o'Pirates were now hiding in
Yo ho, yo ho! The Pirate Indian skirmishers found themselves rather outnumbered by the poorer quality real Indians, but still pressed forward - any unit me band o'Pirates could take down would count, and with the Huron leading their real combat line with 4 x 8 Superiors, nicking a poor skirmisher was a far better proposition
Thar she blows! Me band o'Pirates played a game of "How many Pirates can you fit in one photo?" as their massive attack along the waterside flank built up momentum
They were all lined up and ready to shoot as the blokes in warpaint crept ever closer - the Scallywags!
Ahoy there Jim Lad! The Indians decided that now was a good time to withdraw their poor skirmishers behind the massed screaming axe-wielding mob of battle-crazed warriors. Probably a good decision, especially as some of the Poor skirmishers were now rather badly beaten up by Pirate-ey musketry
Well, tie me to the mizzenmast! Me band o'Pirates had formed somewhat of a reboubt, which made it difficult for the Huron to apply their full strength to the Pirate lines but also unfortunately left the Pirate artillery park rather exposed…
Whats actually happening now?
The strong left flank attack by me band o'Pirates has so far encountered almost no opposition, but the Huron are about to fall upon my centre. The ability to take advantage of the open flank is being eroded by the frittering away of unnecessary Pirate units, which may mean the army breaks before all its combat troops get into action
Well well well, Me Hearties! To add insult to injury a textbook wild swing dice roll meant that the Pirate skirmishers were caught in an evade roll by Huron skirmishers, quickly dropping them into a very perilous situation and almost certainly losing me band o'Pirates a unit they could ill afford to do without at this early stage of the game
Me hearties skirmishers responded with fortitude, winning the initial combat despite being FRAGGED…Even pirates, before they attack another ship, hoist a black flag! But this luck could not last much longer surely?
Me band o'Pirates skirmishers responded again with even more fortitude, winning the initial combat despite being FRAGGED… but this luck could not last much longer surely?
Hoist the anchor! Me band o'Pirates were swept away, with the only saving grace being that this cleared the decks for a unit of Old Pirates to replace them in the battle line. Much better opposition for the Huron skirmishers….
But with no flank guard to speak of, the Huron had been galloping along and one of their countless units snuck in and captured me band o'Pirates artillery park! The Indians, unfamiliar with gunpowder technology, were now possessors of the most potent weaponry anywhere west of Lisbon!
In the middle a rather vanilla solid line of combat was well underway, with the Huron enjoying better quality and more generals. What might possibly be the eventual outcome you all wonder…?
Shivver Me Timbers! Me band o'Pirates were sort of resigned to losing the middle, but their right flank was significantly overmatching the opposition before it, so as long as the middle held long enough there was the prospect of a flanking move to roll up the lumbering Huron formations
Buckets of dice on each side, but the Huron were rolling far better. Not good from the Pirate standpoint…
Whats actually happening now?
This is a bad development for me band o'Pirates, as they are simply not as good in combat as the Huron and needed to do better in the maneuver and shooting phases of the game
Toe to toe the Huron will almost certainly triumph
Me band o'Pirates were holding firm… all apart from one unit, which carelessly happened to be right in the middle of their line, and which had dropped to FRAGGED. The pirate may be unzipped from the middle a couple of games after being undone on their flanks
Even where they enjoyed advantage of numbers and overlaps, me band o'Pirates were making heavy going against the resolute Huron warriors. DISR markers sprouted across the table for both sides..
Whats actually happening now?
Arrrr! Things are going from bad to worse for me band o'Pirates - their ability to stop the Huron relies on a little good fortune, but they are having none of it and the game is slipping away fast
Another massive dicefest and the pattern continues - many crews in me band o'Pirates lose cohesion, the Huron lose bases and attrition is the only winner ..
The first unit to crack is a Mad Pirate unit in the middle of the line, who forget to do the knitting and flee across the woollen terrain in rout
By all that is great and good it is a hole, but the Huron facing them are locked in combat against yet more of me band o'Pirates, who have managed to retain cohesion in the face of the rout and are now gradually regaining the initiative, me old salt! Axes swing, war cries ring out, cutlasses clash and dice are rolled in a game which is more interesting to play than read about or describe afterwards..
Heave to! Me band o'Pirates left flank is falling apart under wave after wave of Huron savagery and another units breaks and route - added to the LF and guns me band o'Pirates have lost ¼ of their strength here alone.
As I live and breathe - in pursuit the Huron have exposed a flank… if the DISR Pirates can pass a CT they can hit them in the flank and maybe swing the flank back in their favour… but of course they fail..
I could see from the crows nest that elsewhere a similar pattern was emerging, as the Huron cut apart me band o'Pirates and start to break the army down into its constituent body parts, ready for display as trophies of their oncoming victory
Me band o'Pirates army is crumbling into Davey Jones’ Locker as along the whole line the Huron inflict fatal blows against the beleaguered seamen
The game ends in a crushing defeat for me band o'Pirates…

Post Match Summary from me band o'Pirates Commander
Kipper me capstans! These Indians are brave fighters indeed! What is a scurvy Captain such as me supposed to do in the face of such a large number of Superior troops?
If they do not end up turned into a battallion of tottering turtles by my meagre artillery park, by the time I get my boys into combat we are almost bound to lose!
It is hardly as if my men were a buch of Dithering Dogfish in this game either - we had a plan, we executed it rigorously but in the end quality counted and battle skill was washed away on a tide of body paint and tattoos! Onwards and Upwards I say, and no more Indians
Hannibal's Post Match Analysis
Damn ye, yellow-bellied sapsuckers, I'm a better man than all of ye pirate-ey milksops put together. So, lets walk through this one again then eh?
Your enemy are better than you in a stand up fight?
So you end up having a stand up fight along a broad frontage. I’ll tear out your tongue and let it flap in the sun before you tell me this is a valid tactic once more!
And you cannot afford to throw away any units before that fight starts? You got no more brain than a sea-turtle!
So you throw away a good quarter of your army before the main battle starts. And give up your only flank in the process for good measure? I should slit the veins on your arms and use your blood to warm my rum!
And I also don't remember seeing anything about anyone walking any sort of plank, no-one with a hook for a hand, no sweeping pewter tankards off the table to enable the unrolling of a map which is just a little bit too big for the table in your Captains Cabin? Call yourself a Pirate? What a shambles!
You should be more a man and less a fish. I have nothing more to add. My work here is done...
