Warmaster Ancients, Devizes 2009
Game 3 saw me facing some Sarmatians
My opponents army was unsurprisingly comprised of lots of good quality LH, some foot, some bowmen and some shock cavalry. To be precise 4 Warband, 2 Bow, 2 Skirmish mounted, 4 warband shock cavalry and 3 good quality light cavalry.
The Gallic warband moved up hoping to protect their flanks with a village.
The rest of the line seemed to manage to make tracks and line up as well.
But the Sarmatians, using their incredible command and control, ran all their cavalry across the table and smacked into the Carthaginians practically the first turn of the game!!!
At the end of my following turn and after a million dice rolls, the situation looked like this.
The Carthaginian cavalry then tried to push forwards against the Dairlylea cavalry
Odd units maneuvered around
The Sarmatian foot hid in a village but Carthaginian Dairylea Cavalry moved up to harass their flanks
Isolated Carthaginian remnants hoped to avoid Sarmatian cavalry.
..and helped by their own Numidians, the Carthaginians managed to catch some Sarmatian skirmishers
The Carthaginian cavalry then managed to chew up the Sarmatian foot from behind.
And then the elephants charged in - but failed, by just one hit point - to smash the first line of Sarmatian bowmen (who were backed up with infantry..??) due to accidentally running over an enemy general on the charge home. He then automatically joined the bow unit, and added 1 dice to their hits that made the difference...
Game over
Hannibal's Post Match Analysis
I suppose you won - but how come those Sarmatian cavalry are aloowed the warband bonus for movement? That makes them better than my, sorry, your drilled troops at maneuvering doesn't it?
Incomprehensible!
Lets see how the next game goes.
