Carlos Vasquez & The Oiran
Showgirl Crew Extras
Carlos Vasquez is literally the new Hotness with his flaming attacks including the wonderfully named 1AP melee strike, "The Flaming Fist of the Great Carlos Vasquez" (2/3/4 damage track, with triggers around burning..of course). I picked up the model, together with a box of Oiran on a recent trip to play at the English GT at Wayland Games. He was hard to find for a while, but now Carlos Vasquez models are appearing on eBay
There is lot's more of this stuff on my Links Page, or on my Malifaux Page
Both models are for a showgirl crew which I have already painted
This is the first WiP shot, with the model mostly base painted and pinned. The model comes holding/creating some huge flames which could/should be used to suspend Carlos in mid air. I wasn't keen on this idea as it would means that Carlos himself would be attached to the base by either one or two (see later) drumsticks, which I wasn't confident about being robust enough to hold him there in normal handling. These 2 small points of contact (via the flames) are highlighted in this picture. Wanting something better I pinned him with a brass rod, which unfortunately goes right up his fundamental orifice
According to Wikipedia, Carlos Velásquez (born August 4, 1984 in Cataño, Puerto Rico) is a Puerto Rican amateur boxer best known for winning the featherweight title at the Central American and Caribbean Games 2006 in Cartagena. He is the twin brother of Juan Carlos Vasquez. But this guy is Carlos Vasquez, so that description is not about him.
I wanted a real showgirl look for Carlos Vasquez, and so instead of just normal single colour trousers I gave him an 'American Flag' pair. This may be politically dubious if you consider that there is also a Carlos Armando Vásquez Carvajal (born December 19, 1982) who is a Venezuelan taekwondo practitioner, and who won the bronze medal for the 72 kg class at the 2005 World Taekwondo Championships in Madrid, Spain, and silver for the 80 kg class at the 2011 Pan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico.
Carlos Vasquez' red and white stripes are done in a couple of tones, starting with very pale grey for the "white", with a central stripe of proper white. The red was Russet red, with a brighter bloood red as the highlight.
For the stars, I had a load of WW2 10mm AFV US army insignia transfers lying around from my 10mm WW2 projects which I used on a dark blue background. By now the torso and arms have been AmryPaintered too.
The stars are classic waterslide transfers, which can end up showing with a border around the transfer. I avoided this by first gloss varnishing Carlos Vasquez' blue leg, then putting the transfers in place, then, once dry, sealing it with another layer of gloss varnish, before finally using Testors Dullcote to finish them off
As is the case with all of my "Showgirl" crew, Carlos Vasquez is based on some (stage) boards, made from Renedra green plastic bases cut to shape and scored to create the floorboard effect.
Carlos Vasquez body is just normal flesh paint, with a wash of

The Oiran
According to Wikipedia, Oiran were courtesans in Japan. The oiran were considered a type of yujo ("woman of pleasure") or prostitute. However, they are distinguished from ordinary yujo in that they were entertainers, and many became celebrities outside the pleasure districts. Their art and fashions often set trends and, because of this, cultural aspects of oiran traditions continue to be preserved to this day.
A typical Wyrd Games 3-pack for figures which are tricky even to fit 2 into a crew
The Oiran in Malifaux have a neat attack which, with a trigger, can prevent the target attacking any Showgirl in that turn. They also have a decent lure casting action too. These ones have been Army Painter washed, but not yet dullcoted.
These were painted in colours I bought for my recent 15mm Sassanid Persian army - Miniature Paints Hydra Turquoise and Vallejo Emerald being two of the key base colours
Carlos Vasquez with a Testors Dullcote matt finish. You can see where I have glued the two trails of flame together for more stability and strength in this figure as well.
The Testors really makes the ArmyPainter ink wash/varnish stand out nicely on Carlos Vasquez 6-pack
I also drybrushed his trousers in very pale blue to highlight the creases on the "Stars" side of it. Here you can see how there are no visible edges to the waterlide transfers too
To make him even more "showgirl" I chose to give him brown and white spats-style two-tone shoes. Monochrome shoes would not quite be mad enough
The "pin" is a bit visible, and I am considering whether it might be better painted grey on this figure.
I also thought about trying to scratch-build some sort of barroom chair which he could be kicking back and leaping off - but that's maybe a bit too much for my modelling skills. I know you can buy charis sometomes as part of sets of but it's a little too much for just one figure
Ladies & Gentlemen, I give you....Carlos Vasquez!
The primary colour for this Oiran is
The purple for her fan is , with a drybrushing of pale lilac
Oiran were first and foremost entertainers. In order to become an oiran, a woman had to be educated in a range of skills, including the traditional arts of sado (Japanese tea ceremony), ikebana (flower arranging), and calligraphy. Oiran also learned to play the koto, shakuhachi, tsuzumi (hand drum), and shamisen. Clients also expected them to be well-read and able to converse and write with wit and elegance. However, this one is a little more 'Ninja', and may prefer to cut off your head rather than converse politely
The main colour on her is the from Army Painter
If - like me - you are worried about these figures breaking in game play you can glue the sword blade to her skirts here as long as you position the arms with this in mind when assembling the model initially
The final Oiran has an arty kimono, with a rather haphazard Cherry Blossom tree design on it.
I nicked this idea off the internet, from someone who did it far better than I did!
Now I just need to decide which one I use !
